Our Story

Orchid Underwriters Agency, LLC (“Orchid Insurance”) is a premier leader in program underwriting services and distribution in personal and commercial catastrophe property insurance.  For more than two decades we have been the market of choice for brokers and capacity providers alike.

Established in 1998, Orchid Insurance has blossomed to become a leading program administrator on track to underwrite more than $375 million premium-in-force in 2021 through its various divisions. Headquartered in Vero Beach, Fla. with additional offices in Tampa, Orchid designs, markets, underwrites and administers insurance policies on behalf of third-party carriers through an independent network of more than 7,100 experienced agents and brokers.

Since its inception, Orchid has experienced steady growth by representing best-in-class insurance and reinsurance partners, and through successful partnerships with qualified independent retail brokers and select wholesale brokers.

Today, Orchid is positioned for future growth through a focused approach in the continued development of proprietary insurance products and programs. A committed team of seasoned executives, recognition, and utilization of advanced analytics, and a data-centric approach sets Orchid apart in the marketplace. Orchid is committed to investing, developing, and solidifying its position as the leading platform in property and casualty insurance products in the United States, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean.

Following a transformation transaction with Gryphon Investors in September 2014, Orchid significantly expanded its retail agent network and launched complementary new commercial products. The organization also made a substantial investment in people, new products, and technology to support future growth. In 2015, Orchid sourced, executed, and integrated two strategic add-on acquisitions, expanding both its geographic footprint and product offerings.

For the past five years, Orchid has delivered superior financial performance, grown written premium at a 14 percent CAGR, and increased net revenue and EBITDA. This growth was delivered while maintaining strong underwriting results.  Since inception through 2020, our commercial lines division has produced a 16 percent attritional loss ratio and has consistently outperformed the market for the past 4 years.

Orchid continues to build through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions while maintaining the underwriting discipline that serves as the foundation of the organization.

In 2018, Gryphon sold its interest in Orchid to TowerBrook Capital Partners, an international investment management firm based in New York and London with more than $12.4 billion assets under management. TowerBrook’s private equity strategy primarily pursues control-oriented investments in large- and mid-market companies, principally on a proprietary basis and often in situations characterized by complexity. TowerBrook’s commitment enables Orchid to pursue long-term initiatives aimed at high-scale revenue increases in strategic growth markets.

As fast-changing markets evolved, creating many new and volatile risks, Orchid continued to innovate, grow, and diversify by launching CrossCover Insurance Services in 2020. Formed in partnership with Scott Hanson, a veteran property insurance executive, the Orchid subsidiary and MGU underwrites middle-market commercial properties for wholesale broker clients. CrossCover helps carriers diversify and lower their reinsurance costs and volatility to CAT events. By rating each submission based on its calculated profit and impact on its portfolio – not on premium – CrossCover aligns with a partner carrier’s results. CrossCover is unique in that the $25,000,000 per Risk Line is provided by a panel of five strong A.M. Best insurance and reinsurance companies working in tandem on each account.
